Insider Guide to Vancouver's North Shore Mountains

You know those pretty mountains that sit in the background of those amazing photos of Vancouver's skyline? Did you know there are THREE ski resorts in them? Whistler's not even one of them (that's an hour and a half farther north). Vancouver's North Shore is home to Cypress Mountain, Grouse Mountain and Mount Seymour, and two of them are already open this season. While it's true that you can go from downtown Vancouver to the top of a ski run in about 45 minutes (with your own car), it takes a bit of planning to make a day of it if you're sans wheels. JASPER IN JANUARY

Most people prefer to visit Jasper National Park in the summer season but the folks in Jasper want to show you just how much fun winter can be! Jasper in January is Western Canada’s premier winter festival, running from January 13 - 29, 2012.
New to the festival lineup this year is Yukigassen, Japanese for Snow Battle. That's right, it's an organized snowball fight. Although Yukigassen was developed in Japan, this sport is about as Canadian as it gets.
