During December many people head to Canada’s ski resorts and back country, but for those who don’t want a snow break in December we recommend a trip to Tofino! We love Tofino so much, that we have decided December is HI-Tofino, Whalers on the Point Guesthouse month!
Tofino still attracts many visitors in the winter and one of the most popular draws at this time of the year is storm watching. The storm watching season attracts visitors from all over the country and even the world. The wild, rugged beaches of this beautiful area become rough and windswept with massive waves crashing onto the coastline. Beachcombing is fantastic, you never know what you may come across. Make sure you pack your rain boots and jacket because a beach walk in December is usually a wet and windy affair! But if you want to watch the storm and stay nice and warm indoors, then have brunch or lunch at the Driftwood Café at the award winning Wickaninnish Inn which is perched on the rocks of Chesterman’s Beach. Another place that offers a warm welcome and fantastic coastal views is The Great Room at the Long Beach Lodge, located on the beach at Cox Bay.
Winter is the best time to go surfing in Tofino, the surf is strong and consistent and where better to learn to surf than in Canada’s surfing capital! The area has a number of surf schools that offer lessons and equipment including a wetsuit and all the gear to keep you warm.
When in Tofino you should also check out Meares Island and the Big Tree Trail, the trail takes you past several cedars which are up to 60 feet wide. These trees are 1000 and 1500 years old and some of the oldest trees on earth. You can kayak, get a water taxi or take a tour to the island.
Hot Springs Cove is another popular spot, it’s a bit further away, but well worth the visit if the weather permits. The trip gets you to the hot springs as well as giving you some time to get your feet wet
