In Memory of Olga Forbes

On the 1st of August, a group of friends and family gathered at HI-Yoho National Park, Whiskey Jack hostel to help with the installation of a commemorative bench on the hostel’s front porch, dedicated to Olga Forbes, the manager of the hostel for 23 years.  Olga passed away a few years ago, but was never forgotten; it was clear through the sharing of memories of those in attendance and those who wrote letters from afar that Olga was a special and unique person who touched the lives of those who stumbled upon the hostel.

Whether it was wry memories of Olga’s powerful first impressions, or the warm recollections of her home-cooked treats she liked to share with her guests – or the way she managed to accommodate any and all comers, no matter how full it was – it was clear that Olga was the Queen of Yoho and is missed by many.

For those of you who were unable to make it up, I hope that you will visit HI-Yoho National Park soon, even if it is only to have a seat on the new bench, listen to the muted roar of Takakkaw Falls and think back fondly on your own memories of Olga.
