Welcome to Backpacker Buzz,

Earlier in January, we lost a truly great member of the HI-C-PM Region family, Olga Forbes. Olga worked as the manager of HI-Yoho National Park, Whiskey Jack hostel for over 20 years. The hostel was her home for every summer and according to her sister Donna Tunnacliffe, "Olga loved every minute that she served there. She loved the hustle and bustle of getting everyone settled into a bed for the night."
The guests certainly loved her too. Olga was always making popcorn and other treats for her guests and making everyone feel at home. Over the years, she became close friends with many people from around the world. Later she would spend her winters visiting these friends and became quite the world traveler.
Tony Chatham, manager of HI-Castle Mountain Wilderness Hostel, has fond memories of playing Scrabble with Olga late into the night. “She was the perfect host. In fact, when the hostel was overbooked, she would give up her own bed to accommodate someone. That’s just the type of person she was."
Hostelling International - Canada - Pacific Mountain Region would like to express our sincere condolences to Olga’s family. She will be remembered as a caring, nurturing person who loved the outdoors. A celebration of Olga's life will be held in Yoho National Park in summer 2012.
