Can you imagine volunteering to build a hostel? In 1933, hostelling was introduced to North America when sisters Mary Belle and Catherine Barclay put up a 12’ x 14’ canvas tent to accommodate youth travellers. Three years later, a modest wood cabin was built to replace it. It was from these humble beginnings in Bragg Creek, Alberta, that Hostelling International – Canada, and indeed, hostelling on this continent, grew.
Hostelling International – Canada is very proud that Parks Canada has designated the site of this first hostel to be historically significant. The honour was announced January 17, in a press release from Environment Minister Peter Kent. Three other locations were also designated.
Alistair McLean, CEO of Hostelling International - Canada - Pacific Mountain Region claims “Mary Belle and Catherine’s ideals of hostelling and affordable exploration has taken hold in Canada and especially with its young people. They would have been very pleased that Parks Canada has chosen to recognize the cultural significance of Bragg Creek, and in a way, the hostelling spirit and the community that’s developed it”.

Hostelling is a great way to travel and meet people. Life long friends have come from my association with the interesting members met over the years. Catherine, who was a teacher of mine, and Mary Belle are to be credited with bringing the beginnings to Canada.
