Maybe you'll do anything to skip the malls at Christmas time. Maybe you’re just a big old Grinch. Whatever the reason, you want to avoid the season, but you want to have a good time doing it. Here are our ideas for great places to escape to for Christmas:
New York City
A vast multi-cultural population ensures plenty of restaurants will be open. We hear Chinatown is packed on the 25th.
And if you do fancy a little Christmas cheer stroll the streets and enjoy the lavish window displays and lights.
Stay at: HI – New York City, just two blocks from Central Park.
There's always a party here, so the holidays don’t affect it much. Everything stays open so you'll have plenty of options for a good time. We won’t tell if you want to mark the occasion by taking in a Cher concert, although we’d rather celebrate with a visit to In-N-Out Burger!
Stay at: HI-Las Vegas- Tod Hostel, right on the Strip.
Disneyland for Christmas? Maybe your inner child is alive and well after all.
Stay at: HI-Los Angeles-Santa Monica and walk the 2 blocks to the beach.
Christmas isn’t a holiday in Japan, but it is a commercial event, so you’ll see some fun and unique decorations.
Eating at KFC on Christmas is an event in Japan, so reserve-yes, reserve- early. That’s something to write home about.
Stay at: Any one of the several HI hostels in or near Tokyo.
Spend the day on the slopes in blissful near-isolation. Or snuggle up with some fondue by the fire and gaze soulfully out at the Matterhorn. Then work off that cheese by going out and enjoying some of the town’s famed raucous nightlife.
Stay at: HI-Zermatt, where breakfast and supper are included with your stay.
