Family of Owen Rooney Asks for Help in Locating Missing Australian Traveller
Hostelling International has been contacted by the family of Owen Rooney, an Australian citizen who has been missing since August 14, 2010.
Owen was last seen travelling to his home in Kelowna from the Shambhala Music Festival near Salmo, BC. Owen got a ride from Castlegar to Christina Lake where he was assaulted. He admitted himself into Boundary Regional Hospital in Grand Forks and left the following night without his belongings.
Owen has not been seen since. He has not accessed his credit cards, bank accounts or online accounts including Facebook.
The family of Owen Rooney is asking the public for assistance in locating his whereabouts. He left the hospital with a head injury so it possible he may not know his own identity.
Here is a description of Owen Rooney:
- 24 years old
- Last seen wearing a dark shirt and shorts
- Has a tribal-style “O” tattoo on his shoulder blade
- Has an “Australian-made" tattoo that consists of a kangaroo in a triangle located on his right leg

Last Friday, Jan 14, 2011 I was at Elbow River Casino in Calgary. At late night I was in conversation with another man about how night was going and whether we were winning or losing. Another man briefly joined in conversation. He mentioned he was Australian and that he was staying at the hostel in Calgary for $28 per night. He said he was not at the casino to gamble, here was there for the drinks. When he left he headed for the casino's sports bar. When I got home, I looked at photos of the missing Austaralian Owen Rooney and noticed some similarities to the man I had seen at the casino. He was about the same age, height and weight, clean shaven, short hair, pronounced upper jaw, the mouth dropped somewhat open and appeared to lean forward when walking. He was wearing a darker color overcoat, no hat or cap although it was minus 20 celcius ( minus 30 with windchill).
