The annual Salmon BBQ at HI-Vancouver Jericho Beach is firin' up the grills again this Thursday evening. Local members get to chow down for free while enjoying some live music and see what Vancouver's first hostel has been up to over the year. All this with a new eco-friendly twist.
This year marks the first zero-carbon event with compostible napkins and cups, and sustainably farmed salmon. Though farmed, this salmon is a product of closed-containment farming, which is a fancy way of saying it protects the wild salmon and the marine environment they depend on. This new farming method prevents the disease contamination that can occur with other forms of fish farming, while also ensuring the sustainability of wild salmon stocks. For more on the fish, take it from the granddaddy of lovin' the planet, Mr. David Suzuki.
If you're not a local member, you can purchase tickets for the BBQ when you get there.
Non-local members: $8
Non-members: $10
Kiddies: $6
Vegetarian alternatives will be plentiful, and the forecast is calling for sunny skies and mostly awesome BBQs with a 90% chance of cake for dessert.
See you there!

Love the annual BBQ's but a group of us did not go this year because of the farmed fish. May be 'sustainable' but still a long ways to go to know if they will provide the benefits of wild salmon, and to know longer-term results of fish raised in closed containment.
Sorry to hear that you chose not to come. We had over 100 people in attendance and the feedback on the fish was very positive.
We understand and recognize the controversy surrounding farmed fish, but closed containment farmed salmon is at the forefront of being a choice in protecting the wild salmon stocks. It's also the only farmed product endorsed as Best Choice by Seachoice - Canada's most comprehensive sustainable seafood program.
Sustainability and our environmental impact is a high priority for Hostelling International since together we CAN make a big difference and make the world a little better. This was our small step towards that vision.
