Lots of people are excited for the upcoming Winter Games in Vancouver, and rightly so. But if you're like some and you just want to steer clear of the hype, check out a few hostel deals outside of Vancouver that'll ensure you're well away from the face-painted, cheering crowds.

Host Your Own Damn Games
From February 1 to March 25
If you want to avoid the hubbub surrounding Whistler in the coming months but still have an amazing ski vacation, head to at HI-Lake Louise Alpine Centre.
From $108 per night in a dorm or $255 in a private, you get:
More ski packages at Banff | Jasper | Fernie
Stay 7 for 6 in Victoria
If you want a break from Vancouver, head to HI-Victoria for a week and get your 7th night for free. Valid until March 31st.
More week-long deals in
Nanaimo | Penticton | Calgary
Edmonton | Lake Louise
(can't be combined with other offers)

Show Up Late in Calgary
The last time the winter Olympics got sticky with maple syrup was back in '88. Show up 22 years (believe it or not) late for the party in Calgary. Stay at HI-Calgary City Centre on a Monday night and you can take part in a little Olympic Oval skating at the U of C and a night at the movies for under $20, which sure beats dishing out triple that to watch people skate in Vancouver.

Better than staying in Vancouver, yet only a 40 minute scenic ferry ride away, why not get on over to the Sunshine Coast for February. Not only does it have the only open cross country skiing close to Vancouver at Dakota Ridge, but the Coast is accessible by public transport from Vancouver in just 2 hours. The Coast also hosts one of BC's best little backpackers, Up The Creek Backpackers in Roberts Creek (www.upthecreek.ca), owned by a former HI board director. Check it out this February, and enjoy the calm!
Great idea. I was thinking just last night how a great ski trip would actually cost much much less than watching other people doing it at the Olympics, not that I ever really considered doing anything so boring. I'm counting my pennies right now for Lake Louise. I think I can manage it.
