I find it's quite pleasant to meet somebody who's been to my country while I'm traveling outside South Korea. I met a guy on the ferry from Vancouver Island who has been to Korea twice already. He told me about his experiences while he traveled there and how the services in Korea were nice. And I talked with another Canadian guy while I was walking around the seawall in Stanley Park. He actually lived in Korea for 8 years teaching English and was enjoying a 3 week-holiday in Canada. Not many people have been to South Korea, so here are some tips for places to go when visiting.

South Korea is located in Far East (of Asia) between China and Japan. The flight time from Seoul to the other capital cities of China and Japan is less than 2 hours. If you are interested in traveling Asian countries, South Korea could be the right choice. Seoul is the capital city that most tourists choose to go, and Jeju Island, which is southern of the Korean Peninsula, is also famous for beautiful scenery and seafood.

If you like cities and urban lifestyle, Seoul is the best choice because it's one of the most dynamic cities in the world. The subway system in Seoul is well organized and convenient to use, making it easy to find attractions. Seoul has many historical sites as well as modern and interesting places. Recently, forty royal tombs of Joseon Dynasty were designated as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. You can also visit a few palaces of Joseon Kingdom and experience royal palace life. If you want to feel the more energetic side of Seoul, I recommend you visit Hongdae (Hongik University). It is the centre of Korea's youthful arts and nightlife where you can find clubs, cafes, and markets.

Jeju Island would be better if you prefer to rest surrounded by nature and varied types of scenery. It was popular for honeymooners in the past before traveling further overseas became easy, and still is a popular getaway destination for Koreans. You can experience scenic beaches, waterfalls, cliffs and caves in mild temperature and fresh seafood. Public transportation is not that convenient, as in other big cities; getting around by rental car or scooter is recommended.
There are three hostels in Seoul and one in Jeju. For more information visit Hostelling International Korea at www.kyha.or.kr/english/ For more travel information, visit www.visitkorea.or.kr.
Jung Sun was studying English in Vancouver and recently completed a 4 week internship with Hostelling International - Canada - Pacific Mountain Region. She is returning to South Korea to finish her University degree in Political Science and International Relations.
